Fasting, medications and the course of the examination — what to know.

Gastroscopy — what the examination looks like (part I)

Step by step

How to prepare for the examination?

  1. 01
    On an empty stomach

A gastroscopy must be done on an empty stomach. Have your last meal as advised by the facility (usually a few hours before), and before the examination refrain from eating, drinking and smoking.

  2. 02
    Medications and chronic conditions

Tell the doctor about medications you take and any chronic conditions. The doctor decides how to handle medications on the day — do not stop them on your own.

  3. 03
    Course and anaesthesia

The examination can be performed under local throat anaesthesia or under anaesthesia (analgosedation) after qualification. If anaesthesia is chosen, arrange to return home accompanied by another person.

  4. 04
    The day of the examination

Arrive at the scheduled time with your current medical documentation and results of previous examinations, if you have them.
